Friday Demonstration: Kafr Qaddum, 23 October ´15
IWPS participated in this Friday´s demonstration in Kafr Qaddum.
Israeli army began firing tear gas soon after the protest march started and much of it was directed on the nearby houses, which is a usual collective punishment measure employed by the Israeli army. Quite a few people suffered from tear gas inhalation, but thankfully, nobody was seriously injured.
About 50 Kafr Qaddum villagers, accompanied by the internationals and Israeli supporters faced heavily armed Israeli soldiers, who were in place and waiting when villagers started their march from the main village mosque after the midday prayer.
Some soldiers were positioned on the road, which was stolen from the Kafr Qaddum villagers for the exclusive use of the illegal Qeddumin settlers; other soldiers were standing on the hill above the village showering the protestors with the tear gas. Some plastic coated steel bullets, so called ´rubber bullets´, were also fired but, unlike in recent Kafr Qaddum demonstrations, there was no use of live ammunition this time.
Villagers burnt old tires and thick black smoke was billowing towards the Qeddumim settlement when the protest ended around 3pm.
Villagers told us that, earlier in the day, fifty olive trees belonging to Kafr Qaddum villagers were burned, when the Israeli occupying army started a fire in the olive trees as part of their training!
