Dier Istyia Stands Against Settler Incursion
Two setter and army incursions into Deir Istiya in one day
On 20 October a bus load of illegal settlers, about 60 of them, escorted by the Israeli army, entered Deir Istiya at 3pm via an agricultural road going through the olive groves and stopped near one of the village mosques.
They got out of the bus and were met by about 100 to 150 villagers who responded to the announcement from the mosque about the settlers arrival. The standoff lasted about half an hour when the settlers got on the bus and left accompanied by the army.
This was the second settler incursion in one day. A couple of hours after midnight a call from the mosque alerted villagers of an incursion into the village by two setter cars. They were also met by a large group of villagers, which prevented their further advance into Deir Istiya.
A witness told us that an army jeep was also present at the scene, but he was not sure if the army came with the setter cars or after they attempted to enter our village.
The settler attacks and harassment in and around Deiir Istiya is intensifying. About a week ago ´death to Arabs´ was inscribed in Hebrew on the arches at the entrance to Deir Istiya. About one week before that a bus carrying a wedding party driven by a Deir Istiya man had to stop its journey and turn back to one of the Palestinian villages after stick wielding and stone throwing illegal setters attacked it first near an illegal settlement in the Qalqiliya region and then in front of the illegal settlement Immanuel, which is a short distance to the north of Deir Istiya.
