Two Shot with Live Ammunition at Kufr Qaddum Demonstration in UN Observers Presence
Bulldozers flanked with Israeli occupation forces and military jeeps cleared the stone strewn main road of Kufr Qaddum during today’s Friday demonstration. Minutes into arriving, a live bullet was fired into the crowd of young Palestinians waiting for their weekly march up the blockaded main road. Violence has been escalating at the village preceding the post-prayer march in the past several weeks, resulting in injuries by live ammunition, rubber coated steel bullets and teargassing.
After the prayer, a UN vehicle pulled up and several observers set up a flag and presence on a balcony high up a building lining the main road. The march, consisting of very young children, elderly and unarmed villagers made its way up the main road when a group of female Italian foreign nationals emerged affront the march and walked to within just meters of the armed IOF soldiers and began to sing with their hands up in peace signs, posing no threat whatsoever. Within minutes, the soldiers fired tear gas and stun grenades at the women, some elderly, who went running into nearby fields for safety from the attack.
Two young Palestinian men were injured by live fire and rushed to a waiting ambulance to be taken to Rafidia Hospital in Nablus. Per the ISM, The first bullet entered and exited Eanad’s leg, aged 20, while the second one stayed put inside Issam’s leg, age 22.
After the military retreated, a pile of tires was burnt, sending black smoke into the direction of Kedumin, a neighbouring settlement built in 1975. Due to this settlement, the road leading to Nablus has been closed off to the Palestinians since 2003. This has largely increased traveling time and costs for the locals.
